Pet First Aid – Basic Procedures

You’re at your friend’s house and you and your friend are playing with her dog. She goes to get snacks. A few minutes later. The dog starts shaking. His eyes are dilated and staring straight ahead. He stumbles accidentally stepping on a nail. Ouch! And that starts bleeding. You freak. What do you do?


HOW TO PERFORM CPR

Remember ABC

Airway

Breathing

Circulation


Step….

  1. Check if there breathing if you can not see your pet breathing begin CPR
  2. Begin chest compressions, the way you have to do it varies between different dogs and cats.
  3. Push hard and fast about 100-120 compressions per minute
  4. Give a rescue breath. Gently stretch your pet’s neck, close its mouth, then cover its nose with your mouth then exhale. Give your second rescue breath
  5. Continue CPR until they can breathe by themselves
  6. Check the breathing often
  7. Continue until your reach your veterinary clinic

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR PET HAS A SEIZURE

  1. Check the time to see how long their seizure was.
  2. Don’t worry they may seem like they’re in pain but they’re not.
  3. Peeing and pooping do not make matters worse
  4. Call the veterinarian no matter what
  5. If series or longer than 2-3 minutes try cooking them down with towels and/or cold packs.
  6. Keep track of seizures in a journal so that the veterinarian may be able to see a pattern.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR PET EATS SOMETHING POISONOUS.

  1. Warning this can only do if it’s done quickly after consumption.
  2. Grab a 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
  3. Contact your veterinarian to see how much Hydrogen Peroxide to give your pet.
  4. If done correctly and in time your dog should throw up.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR PET BLEEDS

  1. Use gauze and apply pressure
  2. When that one is soaked use another one
  3. Keep applying pressure until it stops bleeding.

You call your friend and you guys together perform the steps. You rush the dog to the hospital and your friends veterinarian says that you and your friend just saved the dogs life.
